Salon Effects Fan Girl

I've always been a DIY manicure gal. Occasionally I indulge in a salon visit but generally it's just me on the couch with my nail kit and collection of polishes. Bliss :-)

Earlier this year I was introduced to the houndstooth patterned nails of awesome fashion blogger The Coveted. And so began my love affair with Sally Hansen Salon Effect strips...

Sally Hansen strips come in a variety of patterns; my favourite being Houndstooth and Leopard print. Let me just digress, I ALWAYS get compliments about them. Always! Whether it be paying for a coffee or shaking someone's hand. They get noticed. So much so I've had several people lean across from their neighbouring tables when dining out to ask me how I got my nails that way.

Now back to business, Sally Hansen have recently released a Christmas range *happy dance* *happy dance* Yay! Check out my new faves Peppermint Twist and Prep's Cool below:

Decisions, decisions. Don't know which to choose first.

There are other brands offering this product including a much cheaper option at Target called glamnails manicure (see glitter examples below). While they are a great cheap alternative, I think Sally Hansen are the more superior brand - I can get 14+ days wear out of them!! Now not all the patterns are great, some in fact are a little hideous, but each to their own.

The glitter nails are fantastic if you want a more subtle look but they are less tacky (feel not look) than other patterns. You may find the nail tips don't stick as well with glitter. My biggest pet peeve is that each pack comes with 16 strips ... Grrrrr! Why not 20?? I really hate marketing ploys like this.

Anyway, here are a couple of tips on applying the strips:

If you're nails are short enough, you can apply one sticker to two nails by flipping them over (that will show them, 16 strips pffft)
Use the nail stick to firmly press the strips to adhere onto nails
Avoid heating/air con when applying, it dries them out quicker and makes them less pliable
Add a top coat to make them last longer (sometimes if the tips are not sticking, you can do this followed by pressing down with the nail stick to help apply to nails)
Bendy nail gals may be disappointed as results can vary. Mine typically last over 2 weeks, even with housework and dishes.

Next up on my to-do list is to try the shattered effect on nail polish (or crackle depending on the brand).

Frocking thanks

The month of frocking up and daily blogging is well and truly over for another year and I wanted to send a belated thank you to everyone for their support.

With your help I was able to raise a total of $1,754.65 for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. The tally reached by Frockettes all over the country was a whopping $120,000+ (woo hoo! *high five*).

Halloween Frocktober finale

I made it! Frocktober comes to a close and I'm super excited with all the donations that came rolling in today. And what a lovely pic to end on. Some random kid walked and happily joined in the pose. ♥

What I wore today: printed mini-dress (Tina Kalivas from Alice Euphemia), black leggings and black patent wedge boots.

I'm expecting a few donations to come in so I will make my $1500 target. Last Frocktober Weekend Celebration ♥♥

Woo hoo! Last days of Frocktober!! What a blissful weekend. Sudoku, reading, some chores, dining, TV watching, kitty cuddles and pizza making with my ♥ Mr Bug. We also had the most delicious brunch date with @marcusmoments and @starinmelbourne. Do yourself a favour and head to Chez Dre. Best. Breakfast. Platter!

What I wore Sunday: black dress, black leggings, riding boots, black long sleeve top, brown belt, coat and hat. Winter decided to pay us another visit so basically I was trying to keep warm on a cold Melbourne day.

What I wore Saturday: Grey jacket, black and white tee, denim skirt and pink shoes. Mr Bug also bought me this cute bag for my golf clubs so now I can accessorize when going to the driving range. ;-)

Before the rains came...

Today was super windy and super muggy. Perfect for a work BBQ. Now the thunderstorm has hit and I'm holding fort at my desk while it settles. Three cheers for the weekend!!!

What I wore today: blue silk dress (Espirit), gold ballet shoes and a shawl. My Steve Nicks inspired look.

Last Frocktober hump day

And wasn't it a tough day for fashion. I tried on 3 dresses before I settled on this gorgous Leona Edmiston leopard dress. Unfortunately another couple of dresses have been culled from wardrobe due to a weight gain over the past year (trying to ignore this). But... Doh!! Gonna make the last few days very tough!

What I wore today: leopard dress (Leona Edmiston), black opaques, gold chain neckace (Bondi markets) and black pumps.

Sometimes I forget how completely batshit Melbourne weather is. Then we have a period of days where it is sunny and hot, then rainy and cold, then sunny and hot, then rainy and humid. You get the picture. Bat. Shit. Crazy!

What I wore today: dress (Halsinky), red belt, black opaques, black heels and the can't-go-anywhere-without-it umbrella. I also had a black velvet jacket today which I took off for the pic.. committment to the cause peeps!

Weekend living ♥ ♥

Today was my busy outdoor day while yesterday was my busy indoor day. Today I went to the market, hit 50 balls at the golf range and then spent the rest of the day on a beer nerd fest providing "emotional support" ...ok company while our friends Dereck and Diti made American Pal Ale.

For busy indoor day, I vacuumed, did 6 loads of laundry, washed dishes and finally sorted the bomb site also known as my home. A fine martini after a day of chores was a lovely way to end the day.

What I wore today: military style dress (Gorman), yellow belt, grey sandals and borrowed a cute little puppy called Remus who kept me company on a little walk.

What I wore yesterday: white and blue dress, red and white scarf, red heels (only for photo).

Why this isn't exactly cheating on Frocktober...

So there are 10 days to go until Frocktober ends and I'm becoming a little like Jesus; instead I'm trying to turn 5 dresses into 10.

Now you may argue that I'm wearing are shirt today... BUT this a shirt dress (see what I did there). Plus I'm of the leggings-are-not-pants faith so I would never be caught wearing my legging as pants unless I'm exercising (so hardly ever, right?). Furthermore if Mr Bug leaves a shirt lying around at my place, my kingdom, my domain I can do with it what I choose... in this instance, I team it with leggings, boots and accessories and call it a shirt dress. w00t!!

While this look was pieced together in desperation, I kinda like it and will be wearing it again. Mr Bug may have to wait to get his shirt dress back. ;-)

A beautiful day in Melbourne calls for an evening out. Tonight we're on our bikes and off to The Local Taphouse for Alestars; a night of beer tasting, delish food and good company. What more could a gal ask for?

So what I wore today: vintage floral frock, yellow belt, bronze wedges and black jacket. Today's style was a little inspired by one of my favourite characters from The Slap, Anouk.

Monday dreams and nightmares during Frocktober

Monday morning started off most awesome. I was on a tram heading to Camberwell with @PatriciaDodd and Britta from Community. Valentino and Lilian Frank came on board with Xmas presents for us all. Britta got a dictaphone which was perfect for her since she's going to be a journalist. I got two presents. And they were personalized.Yay!!

My morning then took a turn for the worse because:

A. I woke up to find it was all a dream *sad face*

B. My first alarm didn't go off so I was in a mad rush for work *panicked face*

So in my haste what does one wear to work? Black, of course.

What I wore today: black smock with tie (ASOS), black and white fishnets with black and white heels.

Precious Frocktober Weekend

After a precious start to the weekend (read: hungover), I have two outfits to show you. One from a warm Spring Saturday and today's four-seasons-in-one-day-but-predominantly-cool.

What I wore Saturday: red dress, yellow belt and grey sandals. Granted I stayed in my PJs for most of the day but I did manage a trip to Big Boy BBQ - a new Texas style BBQ place in Caulfield South. Yum!

What I wore today: Cooler weather was back again so the black leggings made another appearance. Teamed with long sleeve black tee, black velvet jacket, digital print denim skirt (Romance Was Born) and the most awesomeness red riding boots (The Frye Company). Perfect outfit for a trip to Mornington Peninsula Brewery.

Friday Stripes Frocktober

In a battle of spots versus stripes, stripes would always win out in my world. It's just a classic look. After 2 weeks of frocking, Melbourne finally gave us a warm day and I think everyone went a little loopy. I finally got to wear a summer-y dress that didn't require opaque tights and layering.

What I wore yesterday: navy blue and red stripe maxi dress (Urban by Target), brown belt and bronze wedges.

Watch out Betty Draper, there's a new frock in town

Meet Beverley. She's the delicious chocolate mud cake I made for today's Cadbury Bake-off at work. Like Betty Draper and her BFF Francine, Bev & I should have spent our time sipping martinis rather than painstakingly hand sewing the bodice and adding ♥♥ to the gown using chopsticks.

I regularly bake for the office so I had to up the ante to not lose my crown as Baking Queen.

What I baked: The recipe itself was simple enough. It's a chocolate mud cake from the newly established Cadbury Kitchen website (one must "test" client products, right?). I didn't alter the cake ingredients and stuck to the recipe. I must say the combination of the 1 1/2 cups of coffee and Cadbury Dark Baking chocolate was nomtastic. Had I not been required to deliver a cake to work, I may have happily sat with a spoon and finished off the cake batter. Mmmm chocolaty coffee goodness.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that...

But I did tweak. Rather than using a square pan, I used a Dolly Varden cake tin. Who knew you can hire these things? I did require more cooking time than was specified due to the shape of the cake tin. As a result, the edges were a little dry for my taste. Overall I was pretty stoked with how the cake tasted and looked. I can't wait to test this baby out on a standard size square tin. Yummo!!

Now back to business. What I wore today: white collar skirt (Brave), full circle skirt, pearls (not real *sigh*) and black/grey heels.

I Spy Frocktober

Inspector Gadget was a favourite show as a little bug so it gave my great pleasure to swan about in my faux-detective outfit today. No big case was cracked nor were any spouses caught having extramarital affairs. Best I get back to the office and drown my sorrows in a bottle of scotch then (#clichesaresorelevant).

What I wore today: trench wrap dress (Dizengoff), tights, and burgundy ankle boots. How cute are my boots?? ♥ ♥ Love them!! ♥ ♥

Day 10 Frocktober

Another week, another Monday, another frock. And more rain. I'm squinting in this shot because it started to rain. No time for another pic though. Doh!

What I wore today: black dress with white piping (Jolet), opaques and black shoes with white trim. I love this dress even if I'm often accused of being a Collingwood supporter in this get up.

Weekend Frocktober

Mr Bug is a keen golfer. I'm not. Although we've been talking about hitting the Albert Park Driving Range. Sorting a frock outfit was a little difficult especially since I had to work around the pink flat shoes (Mr Bug's recommendation for adequate golf shoes). Plus it had to serve as dinner wear.

I have to admit, I was pretty happy with the outfit once the necklace was added. And I was super excited to not be totally crap at golf. I managed to connect with the ball, hit reasonably straight and hit over 75 meters fairly regularly. Yay!! We're planning another golf date soon :)

What I wore for Saturday golfing: black knit dress (unknown), grey tights (Target), hot pink shoes (Top Shop) and necklace (not sure of brand but was purchased in the Flinders Street Station underpass - fantastic shops down there).

Unfortunately winter is back and today was chilly market run day. South Melbourne Market are also right near my fave breakfast spot. I've been heading to Chez Dre without Mr Bug so it was time to take him there. Deliciousness ensued, followed by my grocery shop.

What I wore today: black and white stripey t-shirt (Urban by Target), denim pencil skirt (Ojay), leggings, black patent boots and black velvet jacket.

Casual Thursday Frocktober sad face

RIP Steve Jobs

Traditionally Thursdays are my go-to jeans day. I usually hit the wall and go with jeans due to lack of outfit inspiration. Today was no better so I opted for a denim skirt instead.

Casual Thursday took an unfortunate turn with the news of the passing of Steve Jobs. It's terribly sad to hear that he has lost his battle against pancreatic cancer. My condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

His passing certainly brings home why so many of us are participating in Frocktober. According to the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF), “one woman dies every ten hours from ovarian cancer in Australia.” We're still losing far to many loved ones to cancer every day. Hopefully our silly little escapes in frocks (and skirts) can help shed some light on this and also raise funds for research to prevent further loss.

First Monday after daylight saving kicks in is never a good day, especially if you're a not-so-proud owner of an iPhone. My alarm didn't go off this morning because my time reverted back an hour. *sigh* With a client meeting scheduled later that afternoon, I needed to look smart not disheveled and manic. I chose a Leona Edmiston long sleeve floral dress with black opaques and black heels. Simple, classic and easy to wear.

Now if only the iPhone with that simple and easy. I had to change my time setting to manual as it either jumped an hour forward or backward throughout the morning. Back to looking disheveled and manic again. LOL.

This is actually a great LBD, it was thrown on in haste as I was late for a brunch date with the gorgeous @starinmelbourne. She's been sunning herself in Europe for the past few weeks and I've missed her terribly. So glad she's back. w00t!!

What I wore today: LBD (Dress Up from Alice Euphemia), black leggings (from American Apparel), black patent wedge boots (unknown store in Paris) and necklace (from Bondi Markets).

2011 Frocktober

And so it begins for another year... another Frocktober.

October 1 happened to be AFL Grand Final day and a return to winter weather. I did have high hopes of being uber organised and having all my outfits sorted. I even day-dreamed of sourcing some dresses for stores and local designers. Of course, I didn't do any of that. In fact I woke up in a "what-am-I-going-to-wear" panic on Saturday. It was a bleak, cold and rainy 13 degree day in Melbourne.

So what's a gal to do?

Head to her local patisserie for a delicious brunch and hide away from all the football hoopla by bunkering down in a cinema for a teen flick. With a twinge of shame, I'll admit I loved Monte Carlo!! PG-rated goodness and sweetness. So thank you Chez Dre, Selena Gomez and @marcusmoments for a totally grand-final-free day.

I started Frocktober with my go-to casual look that you may have seen last year (heaven forbid - repeats).

What I wore: Angel style frock (purchased somewhere in Ireland), camel-coloured coat with hood (from The Coatman, Elsternwick), green tights (from Topshop), silver heels (op-shop), twisted scarf (hand-made), black handbag (gift from Vintage Princess) and black umbrella (borrowed but never returned ... oops).

Eddie Pefect: A Perfect Date

Mr Bug and I ventured out on a rainy Saturday night to check out Eddie Perfect's Misanthropology. Must admit neither of us knew much of his work but after queuing FOREVER at the Town Hall Box Office only to be told they don't sell Daniel Kitson tickets, I thought it best to walk away with something for my efforts. Plus I needed a birthday present so I didn't get stuck with a #WGOTY award (Worst Girlfriend of the Year).

And how glad were we to take a chance on Mr Perfect!! I insist you check him out during comedy festival. Any man that can make you cringe, squirm and tap your foot is worth an outing to The Famous Spiegeltent at the Arts Centre. FUN with a capital F!! I won't divulge too many of the gems he performs but it covers a wide range of topics from "fondling" native fauna, lycra lizards, inappropriate father/daughter relationships and my personal favourite; explaining how NO actually means YES (#NSFW i.e. Not Safe for WAGS).

The above clip is a few years old but given that KRudd keeps popping up, he may reconsider this tune for his comeback. :P

Big Old Texas... caviar

Last year I hosted a Texas BBQ for some Twitter fans of the awesome show Friday Night Lights. On this day, a bunch of us discovered we ♥ Texas caviar. I made it again recently and a few of you asked that I share the recipe.

I've pretty much stuck to the recipe found on Chow with a few alterations. The Homesick Texan has another version with Tabasco in the dressing which sounds delish too. You must give her potato salad a go too. It was so yummy.

Back to the Texas caviar...

INGREDIENTS

For the dressing:

1/4 cup red wine vinegar

1 medium garlic clove, finely chopped

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

2 tablespoons canola oil

The dressing is pretty easy and I've stuck to it as all the ingredient are easy to come by here in Australia.

For the actual salad:

2 medium cobs white corn, shucked. I don't know what white corn is. I just bought standard corn from the market and threw it in the oven with husk still on. Supermarkets sometimes sell them with part of the husk removed. I recommend wrapping in foil before cooking. I've also cooked this on the BBQ.

1 (425g) can black-eyed peas, drained and rinsed.I haven't found these canned but you can find them dried at both Tully's and South Melbourne Market (other places I'm sure). I use about a 1-1 1/2 cups of dried black eyed peas and let them soak over night. I also cooked them in boiling water until tender then drained and cooled.

2 Pickled Jalapeños, stems removed and finely chopped (sometimes I leave out if none available)

1 medium Roma tomato, seeded and cut into small dice. I use a bit extra cos I like tomato. Plus I leave the seeds too (Texans must be getting peeved at my improvisations :P)

3/4 cup red bell pepper, seeded, white pith removed, and cut into small dice

1/2 cup white onion, small dice (I've been using Spanish onion as I prefer it)

2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro/coriander

INSTRUCTIONS

For the dressing:

The recipe instructions state to: "Combine vinegar, garlic, salt, cumin, and pepper in a large nonreactive bowl. While whisking constantly, slowly add oil in a thin stream until completely incorporated; set aside." While I have made this several times, this is the first time I've actually noticed this. Hehehe recipe schmecipe. Just mix it.

For the salad:

Heat the oven to 230°C and arrange a rack in the middle. Roast corn until knife tender and golden brown in spots, about 25 minutes (remember you can cook this on BBQ too). Remove to a cutting board until cool enough to handle, about 2 minutes, then slice kernels off the cobs; set aside.

Add black-eyed peas, jalapeños, tomato, bell pepper, onion, and reserved corn to the bowl with the dressing and stir until well coated. I get my hands in here and mix it the salad and make sure everything is well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.

When I made this recently, I served it with a marinated butterfly chook which we BBQ'd. This is a great little salad for summer BBQ's - colourful, delicious and easy to make.

How am I doing?

Last month I set out some goals for the year so I thought I'd share an update:

Who knew the exercise goal would be the one I'd stick to the most? I do love taking my Peggy out for a spin especially along the bay. I've consistently stuck to 2-3 rides per week and have racked up 134.99km in January. w00t! w00t!
Not so good with Meatless Mondays. I've done it once. Managed to squeeze one in on January 31. I'm not limiting this to Monday to make it easier. My downfall is rushing off to get sushi for a late lunch and forgetting about it. Might need a post-it note at work.
Haven't signed up for any tap, hula hoop or circus classes yet but I'm in talks with the lovely Star about being my circus accomplice. Hoop classes are currently booked out so I have been giving them a bit of a whirl at home. I must, I must, I must decrease my gut ..that's how it goes, right? :P
Currently reading Barrie Cassidy's The Party Thieves. Nearly done.
While I haven't signed up to any cooking classes yet I have mastered my seared tuna and soba noodles dish. This is Highly recommended for a hot day! I also made some Donna Hay yummies - chicken and lemongrass skewers and a ginger beef noodle with chilli broth. Sooo damn good.
Now my biggest disappointment so far was not making it a whole month without a parking fine. It was Friday 28, I had a meeting at 10 that started at 11. Then another impromptu meeting followed and BAMM! I got done again. Big fat *facepalm* *sigh* *cry* *weep*

In summary: 1 parking fine, 2 noodle dishes, 134.99 km and a book half read.

Wish me luck for this month.

Fresh Start : New goals

2011 is in full swing. Back to work and steadily moving closer to February. Before we hit middle of the month, I thought I'd share my new year's resolutions.

I don't usually make them however last year I set myself a goal career wise and nailed it. I'm a little inspired by that success to set more goals this year; some are fun, some are health related and others are simply things that interest me and keep me inspired, happy and stress-free.

Twenty-eleven to-do list:

Exercise 2-3 times a week. I'm a slacker so this may be a little hard but I'm hoping my awesome Xmas present from Mr Bug, my new bike Peggy (see pic) will help make this easier.
Participate in Meatless Mondays (environmental reason as well as trying to curb my gluttony)
Dust off the tap shoes and enroll in another tap course with Miss Jane.
Learn how to kick a hula hoop from my knees to my hips with another round of hula hooping classes. Very hard and causes bruising but I will master it *shakes fist*
Fly through the air with the greatest of ease and sign up for a trapeze/aerial course (there must be carnies in my bloodline - only explanation).
Read 6 books this year. I would love for this to be 12 a year but I must be realistic that torrents take up my reading time :P
I am generally crap at cooking Asian cuisine and I want this sorted. While I will never be a Poh, I'd love to master some Malaysian dishes or kick-arse Indian curries.
Save some $$$. If I can learn to exercise more, I can learn how to save. Never too late to learn.
I want to buy 1 piece of art this year. Not stressed if I don't but I would like to beautify my home and support a local artist in the process.
Work wise; I want to achieve at least 1 campaign or professional achievement that I can be proud of.
Travel somewhere. That itch needs to be scratched again.
Cut back on parking fines. Unfortunately there is limited parking at my work and I've been stung with 5 parking fines in 6 weeks. I don't need to explain why this must change.
Blog more.

Lucky 13. Let's hope it's my lucky number :)

Final day Frocktober

It's done! It's over! I've made it to the end of Frocktober wearing dresses and skirts every single day. Yay!! I don't have the final tally but I'm pretty certain, I've raised over $500 for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. Thank you to all who supported me this last month.

Today's outfit is a bit of a schamozzle to end on. I headed down to the Peninsula to spend some quality time with Mr Bug and grabbed this dress without realising how much colder the weather was going to be. And didn't bring a jacket either *facepalm*

So I'm ending with a green wrap dress, brown slip dress and brown boots. Basically I look like a lacy tree ... a girly camouflage perhaps :P

The Social Network

I don't normally review films but this one has got me thinking. I enjoyed the Social Network - the snappy dialogue, the structure of the storytelling, the performances. All were pretty impressive. But did it live up to the hype and 5-star reviews? Um .. well no. It was good but it wasn't brilliant!

While I am spending far too much time thinking about the film, it is more other people's reaction that has got me rattled. Is everyone just Fincher/Sorkin fanboys/girls and loving it because it's expected? What's going on? Someone please explain it to me...

Some of Sorkin's creative liberties bugged me - where is Zuckerberg's long term girlfriend? Guess you can't have a misogynist villain if he's in a long term relationship with an intelligent woman. Starting to believe people's criticisms of Sorkin not being able to write female characters. I just don't buy Zuckerberg as an arsehole or even wanna-be arsehole as the film suggests.

Also where was the emotion? I didn't think the relationship between Zuckerberg and Eduardo was explored enough to set up the emotional betrayal. When Eduardo states in a meeting they were best friends (his only friend), my reaction was really? Oh I thought he was the investor buddy rather than BFFs.

To me this film was a good look into the world of business; the importance of sound contacts, absolute need to review contracts and seek alternative counsel. It also demonstrated the importance of serendipity coupled with smarts and hard work. Whether you're an entrepreneur, actor or even just a regular Joe Schmo, sometimes being at the right place at the right time, is just as important as the hard work and intelligence it takes to get there.

I confess I'm now a bit of a Zuckerberg fangirl. I watched this fascinating interview with him at Startup School. You should check it out, especially when he talks about adapting Facebook to the cultural and legal needs of each country and how he's going about getting Facebook into China. To be honest I found this more interesting and eye opening than the film.

On a side note, I checked out Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook profile and got a real kick to find out we share a mutual friend. So I guess the failings of the film is that I find the real Zuckerberg more captivating.

Penultimate Frocktober

Second last day of Frocktober and we've had constant rain today. All day!! I had a lovely lunch with my friend Irena who showed support for Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation by frocking up too! I wish I got a pic of the two of us in our dresses. *facepalm*

Instead I took a pic with my favourite puppy Bea. Awwww!. After lunch I braved the wet roads and downpour to spend some quality time with Mr Bug on the Peninsula. I'm always greeted by the warmest reception by this naughty dog so I had to snap her giving me cuddles.

Today's outfit is a summer dress and op shop find cardigan to deal with the warmer weather. The boots were essential to deal with the puddles.

Desperate measures Frocktober

Thankfully October is nearly over otherwise I would have to start wearing cocktail dresses, evening gowns and even whip out those bridesmaid dresses I've been forced to wear. Not exactly the best work attire. Today's outfit reflects this predicament - not exactly the best work wear unless I was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A girl can dream.

This dress is a Bettiana Liano frock I purchased this year. To be honest I was super surprised to fit in it. Guess those hula hooping classes paid off.

Anyway it didn't occur to be how flashy this dress was until I met @KimberleyL in Richmond for lunch today. I was all sparkly and WAY overdressed for a bowl of pho.

Tomorrow is the last work day for Frocktober and I'm a little excited that work is having fancy dress for Halloween. I will be resurrecting my Miss Dead USA Beauty Queen outfit. Can't wait to share that pic with you.

Last Hump Day for Frocktober

It seems I have a subconscious love affair with the detective look (or perv flasher) since I have yet another trench coat look. This is a Dizingof dress from a few year back. It's so beautifully made, lined and always confuses people. I have been asked by too many people if I want to take my coat off and hang it up. I usually love their mortified looks when I tell them it's a dress and they feel terrible for thinking otherwise. Ahhh simple pleasures or small things amuse small minds. You decide :P

Having this outfit pictured in a park, really does make me look like a flasher. My over-sized wayfayers help with my disguise while my silver heels make for easy running in case I need to make a hasty getaway.

Client meeting today so this is a perfectly conservative yet stylish look. Animal print scarf, teamed with dress and nude mary-janes. Let's hope I make a good impression and the client LOVES me!!

It looks like we're having a Halloween dress-ups at work on Friday. I'm actually looking forward to it as I have an idea brewing that meets the criteria for Frocktober and Halloween.

Day #22 Frocktober

Summer weather disappeared as quickly as it came and left us with another cool, crisp day. I didn't leave the house but stuck to my guns and wore a wrap dress, knit and leggings.

My friend Verity and her mini princess Abbie visited today. We indulged in some afternoon tea. I made Tinkerbell vanilla cupcakes for Abbie while we sipped tea and ate scones (OK we had cupcakes too).

Friday Frocktober ...

Twenty-one days and counting... today Melbourne is getting hit with a mini-summer reaching 29 degrees. So I have reacquainted myself with a summer dress from several years ago. While I love the colours, it's a very tight fit across the chest. I feel like there's a possible wardrobe malfunction on the cards... let's hope this doesn't happen at work.

Twenty days!! Wow! The dress wearing doesn't surprise me as much as the daily blogging. Daily blogging is hard. Props to you folks out there who do that all the time.

Today's little outfit is another dress borrowed from my friend, Melody. Although I may hide it from her for a little while to get a few more wears out of it. It's so cute and very comfy.

Teamed this number with black heels with a grey toe. I thought I'd keep the stripy theme going to my feet was a nice touch.

Today I met up with @patriciadodd and @busichic for a ladies lunch. Nice company for a such a lovely sunny day. Yay to Twitter ladies!! The three of us agreed that one of the best things about Twitter was all the lovely women we have met via Twitter. Sorry boys :P

I really love this outfit. The green knit has black and grey beading which suits my Betty Draper-esque skirt. I teamed this with my favourite black patent boots that I scored on one of my last days in Paris *sigh* I wanna go to Paris now...

Yesterday I had a very cute outfit to show you. But my work computer wanted to import ALL of my pics, then I left camera at work and now the battery is dead. Tomorrow's outfit is still coming- you just have to trust me it was a cute one.

Today's outfit is my attempt to will Spring to come with colour. While the forecast does say Melbourne will have two 25+ degree days. We'll be back into Winter territory again on the weekend. To be honest, I think I will struggle figuring out what to wear for the warmer days. I'm so not used to it.

Days 15-16 Frocktober

Winter is well and truly back. And so is my Winter wardrobe. Yesterday I popped down to the Mornington Peninsula to visit Mr Bug. It's a teeny bit colder down there than the city.

My cashmere stripe knit was not enough to keep the cold at bay - coat was definitely on when we stepped out. Must say I am pleased and a little proud that my hand knitted scarf keeps on giving. It took me forever to knit but I've certainly got my time and moneys worth out of it. Denim pencil skirt, grey woolen tights and blue/grey suede wedges complete the outfit.

Today we went over to Mornington Peninsula Brewery to celebrate Mr Bug's twin brother's birthday. More on that in my next post, but this is what I wore.

This outfit is a mishmash from my travels. Hoodie is from Zara (bought in Croatia), green tights from Top Shop, London, dress was bought in Ireland and the silver shoes were from Mornington Antique Centre. I'm devastated to hear that the antique centre closed down last weekend. Where will I find my priceless goodies? *sobs* This is a sad day for op shopping.

Day #14 Froctober

Last night I went to MTUB and harrassed the lovely folks there to sponsor me. And they did!! A big $120 of people's drinking money was donated to #Frocktober for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. It was a great night despite my shameless pan-handling. I got to catch up with old friends and met some new peeps. Overall a fun night!!

Today's outfit is a little black number with a splash of red. Black velvet jacket, another LBD with red belt and red tartan boots with heels so high that I feel light-headed. Believe it or not the dress is from my late teens. I guess it's categorised as vintage now. Over 15 years hidden in my wardrobe and it makes another welcome appearance.

My cap is a nod to @snarkle and his boys - the boys donated some of their beer money and also harrased their other mates to do the same. They have asked that I wear 2 dresses at once on the final day - I am contemplating whether or not I can achieve this and not look ridiculous. Does a slip count as a dress? Or do I go Susie Bubble creative?

Before I can decide that, I need to figure out tomorrow's tap dancing outfit. Hmmm...

Another day and yet another season ..maybe. I actually didn't see much of the outside today as I was either glued to my screen or in meetings. But I did think a little colour was the order of the day.

Red knit with high-waisted denim skirt, purple fishnets and purple ballet shoes. I was also inspired by the lovely Ms @tephdee and donned a head scarf.

That's all I got for you today. I'm off to MTUB and will be sticking my hand out to collect $$ for the cause.

Day #12 Frocktober

Late post on today's outfit but definitely wearing a dress!! Tody was particularly uninspiring day in the hair department, hence the hat. Rainy day, frizzy hair... solution is to hide :)

Trusty DKNY dress makes another appearance. The black patent wedge boots came out to deal with today's downpour. I'm having a half slow fashion and half fast fashion day. Boots and dress are brand spanking new while the jacket is an op shop find and the beanie was a hand-me down from a friend (orginally her mum's).

How odd does my bendy leg look? I'm hoping the freak factor will encourage donations from those with fetishes that we would rather not know about :P

And while many of you may not have been Rick-rolled in a while, my Rick Astley inspired badges add a little 80s glam to my look.

Today I had a client meeting so it was ultra-conservative day. Although I did team my outfit with this cute H&M trenchcoat I found at an op shop. I feel a little like Inspector Gadget in this get-up. Go, go gadget 'iPhone! Go, go gadget 'sunnies!

While it wasn't that cold today to wear the light coat all day, I chose the safe but classic nautical theme to meet the new cients - I teamed a nautical knit, black skirt with my trusty nude mary-janes.

Thanks to my lovely friends who responded to my call out for donations to prevent tears and tanties. I hope the rest of you jump on board too. Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation is a great cause plus I need $$ inspiration to wear frocks each day.

Sunny Day #10 Frocktober

Suffering a bit of Monday-itis after upgrading my iPhone o/s to 4.1. Big mistake!! There is a bug for reoccuring alarms that makes them go off either an hour early or an hour late. I was woken before six thank to Apple ... grrrr Steve Jobs. Where's the patch already??

Today the Halsinky cream dress makes another appearance, this time teamed with an animal print scarf and my favourite mary-janes (with faux-ostrich skin).

The animal prints may be to blame for today's bird attack. I was swooped on by a bird. I squealed and ran to safety. Comraderie among the animal kingdom pffft. I hate birds too.

Day #9 Frocktober & #MelbGirlsTweetUp

Today was a rather girly affair - the inaugural #MelbGirlsTweetUp organised by the lovely @misscoca. Thank you for organising Miss Lauren - a perfect Sunday afternoon :)

This frock is an old favourite that I purchased from a St Kilda store Dot & Herby. It has some lovely clothes, in particular well-fitted dresses.

The tweet up was held at Madame Brussels - a little place I've been meaning to go to for a while. It did not disappoint. Lovely setting, attentive staff and a great Spring punch menu to choose from. I've heard rave reviews about the mini-sausage rolls but I was too busy chatting away to old and new Twitter friends to think about food.

There was a fantastic turnout. The Tweetettes kept coming until we took over most of the indoor space - the sun was clearly too harsh for our delicate skins :) Plenty of mingling, chatting and bonding.

And of course the punch. Yummo! I hope we have another TweetUp there. If not, I do plan on visiting again. Next time, I will try the sausage rolls and pink cupcakes.

Before I go, I would like to say a big thanks to Chris for donating $100 to #Frocktober. Much appreciated. I'm still on the search for a red/blue outfit to claim the tenner from DJ.

Day #8 Frocktober and Octoberfest

Octoberfest!! Spring struck with full force on Saturday and after a busy week of work, Mr Bug and I were keen to check out the Octoberfest at The Local Taphouse.

It was an uninspired choice of dresses today - red and cream wrap dress. I need to wear a slip under this dress because the slightest breeze causes me unwanted attention when it flies open *sigh* and of course I forgot to do that *double sigh*

Back to the beer. The Local Taphouse has a great selection of beer and Octobefest celebrations were in full swing when we arrived. There were 20 beers on tap so I opted for a paddle. My choices were:

Weltenburger Kloster Hefeweiss Hell
Schofferhoffer Hereweizen
Weltenburger Kloster Barock Dunkel
4 Pines Kolsch
Moo Brew Hereweizen

Mr Bug sampled the 3 Ravens Octoberfest. I really enjoyed all the beers I tasted. I think my 2 favourites were the Dunkel and Kolsch and the least impressive was the Schofferhoffer Hereweizen - not that it was bad. I just preferred the other more pronounced flavours more.

While I enjoyed the beers, I was STARVING! The bratwurst and chili frites were the perfect treat to accompany my collection of beers :)

Another beer on tap was the Red Hill Weizenbock. We didn't stick around to sample the beer at the pub, however we did break open a bottle at home. Deeee-licious!

While Saturday was all about sunshine, beer and blokes... Sunday was another story. Check out next post - a more dignified affair :)

Day #7 Frocktober

Casual Friday... I usually attempt this look with skinny jeans when I want to pretend to be in the band Ratcat. I'm sure Simon Day would be proud. I wonder if he would sponsor me if he saw this homage??

Frocktober is the best excuse to rock this look with black/white fishnets. And my boots could stake a vamp - just in case I get in that predicament.

To add a teeny tiny splash of colour to yet another black/white outfit, I've added my hot pink button to basically state the obvious "I run like a girl". I might have to wear this button to Monday Night Running Club if I ever get back there. The green ring was a nice find in the Marc Jacobs Accessory store in New York. I remember lots of pretty people being rude to all the customers. And of course shopping intoxication with Melody. Fond memories!!

Yesterday I was challenged to wear a red and blue outfit. After ransacking my home which also included moving furniture and the TV, I found that my only red/blue dress was long given away to charity. I hate it when I do that. Don't fret DJ!! I'm getting that $10 off you ... the search is on. Wait and see.

I'm open to other challenges for donations too. Get creative, send it to me and let's see what I can do. In the meantime, if anyone spots a red/blue dress anywhere, ping me!

Yes I'm in all black again! I wanted to be all sunny and bright but to no avail. I worked until late last night and crawled out of bed wondering how does a girl dress for a sunny and windy day with top of 17 degrees. So this was my I'm-exhausted and must dress-for-all-seasons approach.

OK I do have a few LBD options in my wardrobe. Isn't that just called a sound investment?

I bought this woolen dress with white piping from a great boutique on Carlisle St in St Kilda - it's called Dollhouse. It's a little odd in shape but that it's appeal to me.

I like teaming this dress with my black/white heels. Unfortunately, I look like a Collingwood supporter but I can assure the rest of the country that won't ever happen.

First day back to work after daylight savings and back to school. I was worried this may cause a little lateness especially with the extra task of taking pics of outfit before heading out. I have no idea how fashion bloggers do this everyday.

So viola ... here's the work outfit. Can't go wrong with a pencil skirt, can you?

This is a new silk top I got from Halsinky Project in Brunswick Street. I love this store. Not only am I biased because my friend Vang owns it, but it also has some smoking hot little dresses.

The outfit is completed with my go-to mary-janes. I've had these shoes for some years now and I may just cry if the heel ever breaks.

It's a frockin' good cause

Hello lovelies!

During the entire month of October I will be frocking up in support of a festive fund raising initiative which, aims to raise funds and awareness for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). October has now been renamed Frocktober!

Far too many women die of this disease each year. A major problem is that there is currently no screening test for ovarian cancer and many women are diagnosed when it the cancer is well advanced.

Frocktober aims to help improve the outlook for women with the disease by supporting the quest for a suitable early detection test, through fundraising for the OCRF.

Essentially, Frocktober is challenging women to don a frock for a day, week, fortnight or a full month during October, and get sponsored for it! Check out their website for more details.

Longshot ... more like a sure bet

Last week I wrangled an invite to the launch of Matilda Bay's new dark ale beer Longshot at Toby's Estate in Brunswick. Thanks to @liquidideas and @hierohero for pulling some strings. Although I was terribly late to proceedings, I had a wonderful time and tasted some delicious treats and Matilda Bay beers.

Matilda Bay head brewer Scott Vincent was leading the tasting and gave us an insight into the beer brewing process. I'm disappointed I missed the start of the evening as Mr. Vincent was a fascinating speaker; it's not everyday you get a chance to hear how a product is created from start to finish. You have no idea how devastated I was to find out I had missed out on the lamb cutlet paired with Matilda Bay's Bohemian Pilsner!! Especially when everyone thought it was necessary to tell me how PERFECT it was!! What is wrong with people?? Don't they know teasing ethnic girls about food is dangerous ... for them ;)*stomp* *stomp*

Anyway my hissy fit is over as I remind myself that I was indeed late and only have myself to blame (kinda grrr).

I'm certain they left the best till last despite what my previous hissy fit may imply. Of course it was the best! This was the reason why we were all there - the belle of the ball, the centre of attention; Matilda Bay's Longshot coffee beer matched with a dark chocolate and Longshot tiramisu. For this particular beer, Vincent collaborated with gourmet coffee roaster Toby Smith creating a full flavoured dark ale with hints of coffee and malt, finished with subtle hop bitterness. Hmmm nom nom nom

Given my current dietary restrictions where I've discovered diary and chocoloate ain't so good for my body, I ignored the warning signs and dove right in.

One sip ... "Wow" ... speechless.

I've never had a beer so perfectly match a chocolate dessert before. The pairing was divine and as the beer warmed a little, it had an even smoother taste. I cannot wait to pair this with a beef dish. Still um-ing and ah-ing about which to choose. Suggestions are more than welcome.

What a fantastic evening - great food, wonderful company and a delicious selection of beers. What more could a gal ask for? Thanks to Matilda Bay, Liquid Ideas, Toby's Estate, and especially Scott Vincent and Toby Smith - such a pleasure to meet two gentlemen passionate about their respective crafts.

Stumbled upon this on youtube today. It was my FAVOURITE advertisement when I was a little girl. I always wanted to jump around the bubble too. I cannot believe it's from 1978 and that I remember it. They must have shown in for a few years.

As much as I love it, it still won't entice me to sip a Coke today.

Hope you like beef

Recently Mr Bug and I got back from a trip to WA. We attended a wedding in Perth but that's another post. While over there, we made it our business to head down south to Margaret River, a stunning place that neither of us had ever been to. And one thing that is particularly striking about the Margaret River region is all the damn COWS!! Not real ones but they do have those too. Instead the 100+ cows all painted and decorated by local artists as part of CowParade.

CowParade is currently on display in Margaret River until June 2010. So what the hell is CowParade, I hear you ask? Well it's only the largest public art exhibitions in the WORLD!!

Now I have to admit I hadn't heard about this wonderful project until a few weeks ago when "cow pushed out to sea" popped up on my Twitter stream. I clicked on the link and prepared to rage against animal cruelty. Lucky for me, I just giggled at the prankster who with bolt cutters in hand, 'cownapped' a public art display and sent it floating in the Indian Ocean. For a chuckle, check out the story on Perth Now.

Having now spent time in Margaret River, I love the cows even more. CowParade has been around since 1999 starting in Chicago, Illinois and subsequent exhibitions have taken place in New York, Sydney, Paris, London, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Milan among others. However Margaret River can claim to be the first regional centre to host the exhibition. So yay!! to Margaret River.

The cows will be auctioned on Saturday 10 July and all funds raised go to charities. So please buy one. To date, CowParade has raised in excess of $20 million for charities around the world. Pretty impressive record.

Regardless of the great cause, I just love them because they are gorgeous. Every place we visited, I had to pat the cow (or pose :P). Margaret River is a beautiful region of the world with wonderful produce and wines. The cows just add the extra special touch that makes you smile.

Shame, GirlBug! Shame!

I know I'm a bad and infrequent blogger. Truth be told I'm hanging my head in shame... overindulgent online shopping shame.. well kinda. Here's the juxtaposition I'm in. I'm also the proud owner of a new pair of Grey Ant Status sunnies and... yes there's an 'and' here folks...a pair of cherry red Melissa Frye riding boots.

I've been lusting after these since January but it's taken this long to actually purchase. Not for want on trying mind you. The Grey Ants were out of stock for so long that I almost forgot about them. Now I can hide behind my oversized wayfayers whenever I choose (I just wish I can hide from my credit card statement).

Anyways... I love them so much. Once in stock, I must admit I'm pretty impressed how quickly & efficiently Revolve Clothing dispatched them. Oh what joy to find a package from Revolve in the post rather than the usual drib drab of bills.

A few days later my boots arrived from Revolve too. w00t! I've been lusting after them but couldn't justify spending the US$450+ despite encouragement from evil friends. Checking a website daily just to perve at the boots proved to be a wise albeit obsessive move. They came down in price by HEAPS!! And with a strong Aussie dollar... Well I pounced!!

How could I not? Please tell me how!!

The boots are so comfortable and unique. I so enjoy wearing them. With Winter months nearing, our union is perfect timing :)

Now all I need is a pair of slightly distressed blue jeans to go with. It never ends :P

Dumb shit I do: birds

For those you don't know, I'm terrified of birds. Apparently, it's called ornithophobia.

Today as I got to work, I was greeted by a magpie. So I waited, waited and waited some more hoping it would move right along. Then I tried to tail a passer-by, praying when he walked by the mapgie, it would fly away. Instead, it moved closer to my work place doorway. Rather than waiting all day for the bird to finally fly away, I called my boss to come outside and shoo the magpie away.

Yes, I'm one of those idiots that flinches in terror whenever a bird flaps its creepy, dirty wings near me.

Bondi bliss

Over Valentine's weekend, the BF and I flew up to Sydney to celebrate my cousin's wedding. Sadly I have no photos of that day - nada, nothing, zip. After missing our early morning flight (no one to blame but ourselves), we were mighty relieved to simply make it to the reception to even worry about happy snaps. Despite the hiccup, we had a fab time at Jeff and Steph's nuptials. Congrats guys xoxo. Must also add my surprise to how easy it was for Tiger Airways to put us on the next available flight. And cheap too. They are now on my radar for the upcoming Perth trip and beyond.

That Sunday was the first Valentine's Day the BF and I have shared together. Previous year we skyped while I was in London en route to Ireland. This year we spent a relaxing day on Bondi Beach together. So what did our day entail?

Sausage sizzle brunch from the North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club while kicking back on the shoreline watching the world skate, swim and jog by.
Successful shopping session at Bondi markets where I walked away with 2 t-shirts, leather cuff, necklace and bracelet from Stannard-inc. Ben also bought some leather wrist bands. This has become one of my favourite shopping haunts. I never leave empty handed.
Drizzly walk from Bondi to Bronte and back. Everyone should do this walk at least once. It's breath taking whether it is a sunny day or grey.
Delicious dinner in the bistro of the Bondi Iceberg's Club. A storm was rolling in so I had my fingers crossed to see a lightening show but we were denied.

Highlight of the weekend ... as corny as it sounds it was being able to spend a peaceful relaxing day with my boy.

More pics can be found on flickr account. Below are some of my recent purchases from Bondi (except the boots but I <3 and wanted to show off). I'm so looking forward to cooler months coming up to wear them with my Winter wardrobe.

I'm anxiously awaiting for Grey Ant sunglasses to be restocked too. Plus I'm um-ing and ah-ing about parting with $$ for these super hot cherry red riding boots. One this is for certain, this Bondi trip has reignited my desire to shop, shop, and shop some more.

Dangerous time for my budget... dangerous times.

3 hour voyage without Gilligan

Last Saturday I was lucky to be invited for a lovely day of sailing on the bay. It was a chance for the team behind the Run for a Safe Climate to reunite and reminisce. We boarded a 60-foot catamaran named Pelican 1 and set sail from Docklands.

Melbourne put on a super fine day too. Strong wind warnings were issued and although it was fairly choppy heading out Brighton way, it was such a gorgeous day to be out on the water.

Due to the wind factor, I opted to wear long pants, long sleeved white kaftan with hat, sunnies, sandals and a tonne of sunscreen. Not one millimeter of sunburn to report so yay me!!

I've never seen my city from that vantage point, so when I spotted St Kilda Pier and Point Ormond - two significant spots for my beau and I... well I squealed with glee.

No seasickness to report... although I do think the crew mistook my pasty white skin and clumsiness as seasickness, twice offering to assist me and even get me a bucket. Err... thanks but no :)

This little piggy went to the Peninsula

Last Tuesday we 'celebrated' Australia Day commemorating the day the British came to this fair land. And although I worked the Monday, we basically had a 4-day weekend. I trotted down to the Mornington Peninsula to spend some time with the boyfriend and enjoy my surrounds.

I cannot praise the Morninton Peninsula enough! If you ever get a chance, head down there. Enjoy the food and wine, the beautiful beaches, the views and the peace (especially if you stick to the Western Port).

Basically I was a piglet and ate.

Sunday
Brunch at the Somers General Store followed by a beach walk.

Somers General Store does have a breakfast menu but we've yet to get there early enough to sample it. It looks pretty simple but that's half the appeal. Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day so I really want to sample it, but I must stress the lunch menu is pretty good though. Although many praise the merits of Merricks General Store (and it does deserve it), I do prefer heading to Somers General Store instead. The food is a bit simpler with fish and chips, fritattas, Caesar salad, burgers, curries and other gourmet deli treats. The decor is quaint with local finds and signs decorating the premises. Another bonus is it has a general store so you can breeze in, get your papers and milk then stick around for a coffee and tasty treat.

I opted for the ocean trout and asparagus frittata while Ben went with the Caesar Salad. We also shared a bowl of fat chips. Neither of us were disappointed with our choices. I must note the salad came out with a blanket of bacon much to the delight of Ben (and me.. I snuck a bite). The portions are not overwhelming so it's the perfect spot for a light and scrumptious lunch.

If you do overeat, I highly recommend the walk along Somers Beach. But don't overdo it, because the stairs back up can be a killer :P

Monday
Late lunch at the super cool Red Hill Brewery. Yummy beer and yummy food. Go there! I insist.

After putting in a few hours of work on the computers, the tummy grumbles forced us to head out in search of food. Initially, we were searching for the best-pie-in-the-world my boyfriend has ever eaten. Quite possibly he's making this up to taunt me because once again, we haven't been able to find the place.

Instead, we hit the Red Hill Brewery. They tweeted they were opening extended hours today so we always knew we'd be heading there... just not to eat. I'm glad we did as I sampled the delicious Brewers Ploughmans plate. You can quite easily share this plate but I was in a greedy mood and didn't let Ben have too many helpings (serves him right for pie-teasing).

Tuesday
Lunch at Pier 10 Vineyard

Each time we drive by Pier 10, Ben suggests we should go there as the food is pretty fine. We drive by this place quite a bit... so finally the gods smiled on us and we ventured out for more yummies.

Thankfully there weren't too many crowds during the public holiday so we were able to claim a table on the outdoor decking. It was a beautiful day and the view was divine. Plus they had a 2-piece band playing and as delightful as the tunes sounded, it may have been a little too loud inside to enjoy such a delicious lunch.

We were both on a fish diet after consuming the largest King Island T-bone steaks the night before. A light seafood lunch was definitely the way to go. I chose a grilled fillet of snapper served with panzanella salad drizzled with gazpacho while Ben chose the fish and chips. Once agin, we nailed it with our choices ... happy drool-worthy lunch followed by a shared dessert of flourless chocolate cake. I must admit the dessert defeated me. I could only manage a few mouthful so all credit to finishing off the cake goes to the man *bows down*

To combat the overindulgence, a couple of hours of wanderings through Ashcombe Maze was in order. I've been asking Ben to take me here for ever!! And he finally did. Yay! Enjoy some of the piccies below.

Despite all the glorious food we consumed on the weekend, this was my favourite spot. I felt like I stepped into a fairy tale. And with all the gnomes and fairies hidden in the trees, how could you not think you were in a C.S. Lewis world? If you have kids or simply are a big kid, head down to Shoreham and check it out. Mind you, the walk through the maze is a tight squeeze, so unless you're a child or a stick thin model... remember to breath in!!

Lessons from the movies: Thelma & Louise

There are plenty of life lessons that can be taken from the movies. Commonly repeated mistakes include kissing a boy when there is NO orchestra nearby to provide the music, running the wrong way when being chased by a machete wielding killer (the stairs, always go for the stairs!!) and don't ever bother saying hello or goodbye on telephone calls, that's just time wasting ;)

This weekend I'm hosting a Texas themed BBQ for fan-boys and gals of Friday Night Lights. It got me thinking... what do I know about Texas?

Thanks to the 1991 Ridley Scott film Thelma and Louise, I know it's best not to shoot a man in Texas.

Otherwise, you will end up being chased by a swarm of policemen including a cool dude who looks like Harvey Keitel.

If you are going to shoot a man in Texas, make sure you have a sweet ride and your good looking best friend is along for the ride so she can have sex with Brad Pitt.

But don't be fooled...you will die driving off a cliff. At least you will look good doing it.

Another decade bites the dust

Happy New Year folks! Hope the new year and new decade brings you much good fortune and happiness (and not too much from the flip side).

Ben and I eased into the New Year in a fairly relaxed manner after a swim and the cool change hit; a few beers, a little dancing, bag pipes (uh-huh I don't lie) and tasty treats with family and friends. Nice and relaxed *happy sigh*

As for New Year's Resolutions, I haven't really made any except a left over one from last year - finish the damn food intolerance diet so I can just get on with normal eating minus the stuff that makes me sick.

Oh wow, Cassie! Lovely!

I'm openly admitting my girl crush on Cassie Ainsworth from Skins Season 1 & 2. Cassie may be old news in Skins world but I had the pleasure of watching Skins Season 2 recently after falling in love with her years ago in Season 1. *sigh*

She has always been one of my favourite characters on the show. Her smile, her kookiness and even her eating disorder (probably the most realistic depiction of the bizarre relationship people can develop with food to control their self worth). Cassie is complex, heart warming, charming, sweet, completely nutty and disarmingly astute when it come to her friends and relationships around her.

I didn't eat for three days so I can be lovely - Cassie, Skins

And best of all, she has a killer wardrobe. Apparently, Hannah Murray the actress who so lovingly plays Cassie used her own wardrobe; vintage dresses & skirts, t-shirts with cute prints, lurex socks/tights, Mary Janes and t-bar flats, oversized sunnies and an amazing collection of hair clips. Her first appearance cemented my favour when she teamed a glittery mini-dress with tuxedo tails.

If you haven't caught this show yet, WATCH IT NOW!! Season 3 has a new cast but that hasn't let the quality slide at all. The only sadness is that Cassie is no longer there to inspire me with her beautiful and whimsical UK style. Tea, sweets & vampire kisses

This is what occurs when one overindulges in cakes, scones, crepes, tarts and ice-cream at the Windsor Hotel High Tea. Yes, that's me in a self-induced 'sugar'-coma. Oh the joy! Oh the joy! :P

To celebrate a relationship milestone, BF & I decided to check into the Windsor Hotel & check out their Sunday afternoon High Tea. Nowadays, high tea often refers to an elaborate afternoon tea rather than supper or 'meat' tea as it was traditionally known. Regardless, it was still lovely to sit in the Grand Ballroom and wonder which Melbournians & out-of-towners have also dined here. After all, the hotel has been serving afternoon tea since 1883.

We joined a handful of couples (maybe 6 men in total) & scores of women folk in celebrating an old Windsor Hotel tradition. So I donned my DKNY dress (now a wardrobe staple) & tried to remember not to place my elbows on the table, not speak with my mouth full or slurp or make any loud noises. Also you must be very polite to your servers. I succeeded in being polite to our waiter (yay 1-for-me) and also managed to NOT talk with my mouth full... well, only because I was completely engrossed with the delightful treats on offer. Seriously, who can talk when you're mesmerized by scones, cream & chocolatey treats?? Not me!! I did however break the hold long enough to Twitpic which I'm certain breaks many etiquette rules. *droolz* Oh well... too bad.

BF & I also took in a late night horror treat at MIFF on Saturday night. Nothing screams romance more than a Korean Catholic priest who becomes a vampire, develops sexual urges, covets his best friend's wife & she becomes a blood thirsty psycho. No? Doesn't it sound like fun?? Well it was!! Bloody, gory & hilarious! With a running time of 133 minutes, Thirst was a tad too long. I've give it 3 1/2 stars ... it made me laugh, it made me squirm & the whole journey was awesome. I just wish it did it more succinctly. Hope to see some more films at MIFF this year. Any suggestions, do let me know. Before I go, how crazy was it that the MIFF website was hacked by the Chinese for not withdrawing "The 10 Conditions of Love" from the Festival. "The 10 Conditions of Love" is a documentary about the exiled Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer. Festival dirctor Richard Moore was contacted by the Chinese Consulate last Friday demanding the film be withdrawn and wanting justification for its inclusion. Obviosuly, such a request was declined (Yay!! Mr Moore). It appears the Chinese governments efforts to squash this little film & the minority group it represents have backfired with programmers around the world contacting the Festival Director for their chance to screen the film too. Chinese government did succeed in withdrawing the Chinese films from the Festival. It's an interetsing display of bullying and censorship in action. I hope it's not a sign of things to come.

Revenge of the Nerd... I hope

So I feel a little bit like 'Josie Grossie" from Never Been Kissed. Not the "Smokin' hot babe who wins the boy" at the end of the movie. No, not her... the pre transformation one. The one wearing glasses & braces, has acne and is either weezing or sucking on her Ventolin. OK so maybe that's a slight exageration but it's pretty close. *weeze*

I've been on this crazy-ass diet for a week now to determine what food intolerance I have. Last week I tested for allergies and didn't react overtly to anything but I did react slightly to certain foods. So for 4 weeks I cannot have caffeine, wine, breads, olives, onion, etc, most vegetables, all fruits except pears, most spices, drinks, nuts, oils, OK most food and no dairy products but thank god for rice milk. This is torture for a good old ethnic girl who only ever listened to her mother when she said "eat more". Luckily I can eat meats, potato, rice and more importantly I can have gin & tonic!! Liquid diet it is then :P

I discovered that food is the second most common cause for nasal & sinus congestion. It's taken 34 years to discover this fact but finally I may put an end to this constant cycle of illness... the sniffles, then sore throat & viola a chest infection... Not only am I tackling this with crazy-ass diet but I have an arsenal of WMD's.. yes that's right... Weapons of Mucus Destruction. See my pretty babies below.

Results so far are: 6 days of headaches (gone now), hunger (from not knowing what to eat then just putting off eating - my fault), grumpiness/anger/irritable (my poor BF) because I'm hungry but best of all.... I'm congestion-free (almost). However I must bitch about how bad, bad, bad flavourless toothpaste is. GAG!! EEEK!! Day 7 has been pretty good as I finally figured out what to have for lunch... Mountain Bread. Lunch was always my stumbling block. I wouldn't eat it cos I didn't know what to eat, I'd get hungry, then angry and then headaches. I really am so predictable. How disappointing!

Moving onto the the not-so-predictable. My lovely friend Verity chose to go to a Burlesque class for her Hen's night party on the weekend. I was a little hesitant. Choreographed movements & I don't go so well together. However this was quite a bit of fun!! Thanks to Bottoms Up Burlesque on Brunswick for a fun night out with the gals. Two surprising outcomes from the night:

1. I successfully completely a short choreographed routine. Like wow! Seriously!
2. I surprisingly had a great time using a feather boa.

Highly recommend it for a night out!! And am considering further classes. Check out our moves below:

An Inconvenient Lock Out

What a super fantastic start to the week I've had. Thanks to **spirit fingers** Just Jack at the c word, I nabbed an invite to the launch of Safe Climate Australia. Al Gore was the keynote speaker for the launch. I'm still pinching myself I was in the same room as him. He was such an inspirational speaker. I'm really excited about the possibilities & opportunities that will come from tackling the climate crisis.

Unfortunately this was the only shot I got of the man himself. I was half tempted to rush over to him like the rest of the crowd but had an appointment on the other side of town to get to. I didn't like my chances of battling it out with 1000 other guests for cabs at Docklands.

So check out the Safe Climate Australia website for more information. SCA are a non-government organisation which plans to mobilise all the scientific, technological, economic and political expertise to tackle the problem of climate change. There is plenty to do to keep the world & us safe, so sign up or donate or educate others if interested.

*sigh* I must say I peaked way too early this week. GirlBug world came crashing down to reality with a thud ... computer crashes, wedding dramas (not mine), doctor enforced diet (oh dear lord, my 1st ever diet) and getting locked out of my house. Ahhhh a comedy of errors really. Can't wait til Friday when I can dance my 'troubles' away Burlesque style at Verity's hen night. This should be fun, no matter how uncoordinated I am when it comes to choreographed moves.

Mornington Peninsula bliss

After a crazy busy week at work with some 5am start times, filming a DVD plus keeping on top of other work, it was so wonderful to head down to Shoreham for the weekend. I was EXHAUSTED by Friday afternoon so had a sense of déjà vu when I was walking down the street in the rain dragging my little wheelie bag. Lugging that bag plus my giant Mimco handbag from tram to train to car with my weary body... made me feel like I was back in Europe :( Oh well... it was a weekend away.

And what a relaxing weekend away it was. Spooks marathon, cuddles with a cheeky puppy (& BF of course), a local footy match in the rain & plenty of delicious food. BF's mum was super super nice & made us a mouth watering lasagna (yes we're spoilt :P). I made a sweet potato, ricotta, pecan & baby spinach salad. The lasagna had black olives throughout the sauce & worked so well with the salad. It was a perfect match *droolz*. Must make that combo again.

After lazing about & eating til our ♥'s content all weekend, we decided to take Bea, the crazy puppy for a walk along the beach. With dreary, grey weather since Friday, it was good fortune to have the sun shining as we headed out for a walk. Beautiful weather, beautiful beach... exhausted as Bea walked me. My arm was almost yanked out of its socket several times. En route home, I was glad that Bea led me up the hill hehehe.

So I have an early start again tomorrow. Pick up at 6am *weeps* although it should be our last day of filming tomorrow (fingers crossed anyway). This week I will be counting down the days til pay day. I've been lusting after this bag by Melbourne designer Lulki. This week it will be mine... all mine!! Ok yes I have to wait delivery... but then it will be mine... all mine!!

BTW I'm loving the quality of photos from my Jesus phone. They do not look like a camera phone, do they?

Design, Dali & FOOTY!!!

Many people have been asking me how I've settled back into life in Melbourne?? Very well actually. I ♥ my home. I ♥ my kitties and of course I ♥ my BF. I was also very lucky to be offered a wonderful job on my 2nd day back. I'm the first to admit that life has been pretty good to me of late.

But also what makes the transition easy is that I ♥ Melbourne. This year marks 10 years living in this city. I gasped when I saw the Eiffel Tower, had to catch my breath watching a sunrise in the Sahara Desert... but still after 10 years here, my ♥ skips a beat when I see the city skyline. Its not the perfect city (like that exists) but its my city.

Last Sunday, the BF and I enjoyed some afternoon delights in the city. Design Market was on... yipeee!! We cruised through the Fed Square car park with the hordes of other Melbournites looking for goodies. I did um & ah about a pair of chain leggings... I want, I want. But held off. The change rooms on offer didn't look like a place I was willing to gamble on. I envisioned trying to remove my Cheap Monday skinnies only to flash my derriere to the rest of the crowd. No thank you. I took their email instead... which reminds me, MUST EMAIL those girls!!! They had great jewelry, great leggings and out-there head pieces which would turn heads come Spring Racing Carnival time.

Another treat of the Design Markets is always running into Micheal Pham ... if u don't know Pham... poor u. And if u don't know his button collection, shame on you. My 'Hold Me Closer Tony Danza' is one of my prized possession in my wardrobe... as is my Rick-Roll badges. Check em out at Stitch Badges.

Being so close to NGV, we couldn't pass up the chance to check out the Salvador Dali exhibition. Do yourself a favour and go check it out. Its a varied collection spanning Dali's entire career so its good to see the style change over the years. The exhibition is running until October 4th.

We'll be heading back at we only had an hour to check it out. No time for the films screening. Although a favourite part was the jewelry by Dali. Firstly, I never knew he made any. Big surprise! Second, I love how it was displayed. The room was covered in red velvet padding with sweet music playing. I felt like I stepped back in time to my childhood and walked into my jewelry box. The only thing missing was the little ballerina spinning in the middle of the room. I can't say I loved all the pieces but it was impressive nonetheless.

Tomorrow I'll be venturing out into the cold to go to another staple of the Melbourne winter calender. Community Cup is BACK!! w00t!! After a year hiatus, CC has a new charity Reclink on board and a new location, Elsternwick Park in Elsternwick. Espy Rockdogs V RRR/PBS Megahertz remains unchanged... looking forward to the match. The bands begin at 11am and bounce is at 2.30pm. Go Megahertz ... I don't think I've ever seen them win yet but I just can't barrack against a team wearing the Swannies colours. Finger crossed the change of location brings a little luck their way.

Tonight, I'll be keeping warm, resting a little and start to put clothes up on my ebay store. After years of hoarding, I've decided to part with a few jackets for now. There's plenty more that has to go... but "polako, polako"* is my motto. Its taken for ever to get to this stage, so let's not overwhelm the @girlbug hehehe
